Borderlands 3: Gearbox

According to Erik Kain of Forbes, the only way to open the special golden loot chests on Sanctuary (and presumably other areas) is to acquire something called SHiFT Codes. These "codes" mimic software licence codes, and are valid for a limited time ... in many cases, just hours. Redeeming these codes grants Gold Keys, which can then be used to open special chests.


Kane suggests that, "...one way to get some of the best loot is to follow Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford on Twitter (@DuvalMagic), where he randomly doles out SHiFT Codes at all hours of the day..." (and night).

Gearbox SHiFT sign-up

Visit Gearbox's SHiFT website to set up a free SHiFT account, where you can also redeem your codes. Once you have a SHiFT account and have linked your game platform, you can then redeem your codes in-game using the Social Menu. Here's an example of what SHiFT Codes look like. Back on Sep. 20th Pitchford tweeted these codes for Borderlands 2 that grants 5 Gold Keys, which will remain valid through Oct. 7th:

After acquiring a Gold Key, you can use it right away, or save it for later. There's a plethora of advice for when you should open the special Epic or Legendary loot chests (i.e. open it now, or wait until you're at Level 50) ... regardless, if / when you acquire a SHiFT Code, redeem it immediately!

IGN stresses this important point: "Simply redeeming a SHiFT code will not automatically add a Golden Key to your inventory. You must check your in-game mail in the Social tab to find the mail with your Golden Keys, and press the Accept button until all available keys have been added to your inventory."
