Therefore, it's advisable to gather as many different mods as you can, and keep them in your inventory prior to Shadowkeep's launch on October 1st ... you will only need one of each type. If you have multiples of one mod type, just dismantle the extras for the mod components that you will undoubtably need in the new DLC.
Interestingly, if you take a weapon with you into Shadowkeep that has a mod applied, it will not be converted to the new mod system, nor will the old mod function, apparently. Any mods currently attached to your weapon(s) will need to be dismantled before any new mods are applied in Shadowkeep. Of course, if you don't want a weapon and decide to dismantle it, any mod attached will return to your inventory.

Mod sources in Shadowkeep will generally become the responsibility of two vendors: the Gunsmith (Banshee-44) and the Black Armory Curator (Ada-1). Check out the links below for an excellent description and availability of the new mods.
According to Medleyoz's infographic, Shadowkeep will offer 16 new weapon mods, and 35 new armor mods. As for the new Armor 2.0 system, the current armor mods won't work either, and instead will have to be earned for the new armor. Houndish provides a good overview of this topic in his video.
